Unlike the toilet in your home, your caravan or motorhome toilet does not flush into the main sewer system, but instead uses a cassette to store the waste which can be emptied at designated chemical waste points. In order to keep your motorhome or caravan toilet working properly and minimise nasty odours, there are a few caravan toilet chemicals you will need to stock up on.
Toilet cassette chemicals
These are generally the blue chemicals - often in a bottle with a blue label so they are easy to spot - and these help to break down solid waste in the toilet cassette. They are generally available in liquid form which you add to the cassette. Remove the cassette from the caravan, unscrew the cap and you’ll see markings on the inside to measure out your caravan toilet chemicals. Pour in the correct amount, close the cap and reinsert back into the caravan.
We recommend this Thetford Aqua Kem Toilet Blue Fluid for all caravan and motorhome waste holding tanks.
Flush tank chemicals
These are generally the pink chemicals - often in a bottle with a pink label so you can easily distinguish them from the cassette chemicals. These flush chemicals have been developed to leave a pleasant aroma and a nice shine on your toilet bowl. You simply add the designated amount of pink additive to the flush tank to keep your toilet looking clean and smelling fresh.
We recommend this Thetford Aqua Rinse Plus to add to your flush water tank.
Green caravan toilet chemicals
When it comes to running a leisure vehicle, there are quite a lot of caravan consumables that you’ll need to buy and if you’re trying to be environmentally friendly, you won’t want chemicals to spoil your green intentions. In addition to the pink and blue toilet chemicals, you’ll also notice green additives, which are ideal for use by environmentally friendly caravanners. Some campsites specify that you must use green toilet fluids, so check before you book to make sure you’ve got the right coloured additives on board.
We recommend this Thetford Aqua Kem Green Concentrated for use on eco-friendly campsites.
What about toilet paper?
Whilst you can use regular toilet paper in your caravan you might find it blocks your cassette and makes for an unpleasant emptying experience. It’s far better to use paper designed for use in a chemical toilet, such as Thetford Aquasoft Toilet Roll, or cheaper supermarket paper, as these will break down in your tank much easier.
