Blue, green or pink? Cassette toilet chemicals explained

Blue, green or pink? Cassette toilet chemicals explained

Having an onboard toilet makes a real difference when caravanning during the winter seasons. Now there’s no need to brave the cold in the middle of the night, or don your wellies to trek to the campsite’s toilet block - all you have to do is stock up on the right cassette toilet chemicals before you set off.

Even if you’re new to caravanning, you’ve likely noticed that these important chemicals come in many different colours. And, as you’ve probably also guessed, they perform different roles too, which is why we’ve put together our beginners guide to cassette toilet chemicals.

Read on to find out which one is which, what they all do, and where each one goes!

Cassette toilet chemicals

Whilst they are both built-in units with flushing mechanisms, your caravan toilet is not quite the same as the one you have at home. Whilst regular toilets flush into the sewer system, a cassette toilet stores the waste in a holding tank instead, which is then removed from the caravan and emptied at the end of a trip.

Since the waste is stored within an onboard unit, a dose of chemicals is needed to keep everything fresh and hygienic whilst on the road. Enjoy clean (and odour-free) facilities this February with these essential chemicals from our range.

Blue

Waste tank chemicals, which are generally blue, serve two purposes onboard a caravan. The first is to break down waste and paper within the holding tank, and the second is to neutralise unpleasant odours with a mild fragrance.

To use these antibacterial chemicals, simply add the correct amount to the cassette after emptying, cleaning, and refilling it with fresh water. Always fill the cassette through the spout, and add the chemicals in this way as well to avoid any spills, before securing the cap and reinserting it back into the caravan.

We recommend: Thetford Aqua Kem Toilet Blue Fluid, suitable for all caravan toilet waste holding tanks.

Green

Some campsites may have a policy against certain types of chemicals, such as those containing formaldehyde, and may also request that biodegradable chemicals be used to treat onsite waste.

If this is the case for your destination, or if you yourself are looking to be more environmentally conscious with your chemical choices, then choose a green toilet fluid. These options minimise the amount of harmful chemicals released into the water system but are still highly concentrated to control odours and liquefy waste, making it much easier to empty the tank.

We recommend: Thetford Aqua Kem Green Concentrated for eco-friendly efficiency in a small, convenient bottle.

Pink

Last, but not least; flush tank chemicals. These pink, concentrated chemicals are added to the flush tank to keep the water clean, and to help move waste through the system and into the holding tank whenever the toilet is flushed.

They are specially formulated to leave the toilet clean and sparkling after every use, and like most cassette toilet chemicals they also come with a scent additive to keep the caravan smelling pleasant throughout every trip.

We recommend: The Thetford Concentrated Duo Pack, for both your flush tank and waste holding tank.
